In 1880, Thomas Edison strung together a set of electric lights and hung them outside of his laboratory during Christmastime. Two years later, Edison’s friend Edward H. Johnson wound a strand of red, white and blue electric lights around his Christmas tree (the tree even spun!). It took several more decades before such lights were widely and cheaply available.
