Installing Motion Sensor Security Lights Under Soffits

Installing motion sensor security light under soffits is a smart way to boost home security without sacrificing curb appeal. However, a few technical nuances separate a successful installation from a frustrating one.

First, location is critical. For proper moisture protection, the fixture’s junction box must be positioned at least 412 inches from the eave’s outside edge, with all sensor controls facing the ground once installed. Additionally, the lamp heads should be kept at least 30∘ below horizontal to prevent water ingress.

When selecting your fixture, ensure the junction box is rated for outdoor use and the light is UL-listed for damp locations, as the space under a soffit is considered “damp” rather than “wet”. The optimal mounting height is approximately 8 feet above ground level.

Wiring is straightforward: match the black (hot), white (neutral), and green (ground) house wires to the corresponding leads on your new fixture. For eave mount installations, many sensors feature a directional arrow that must point toward the building for proper motion detection.

Finally, test the sensor range and sensitivity. PIR sensors are most responsive to motion moving across their field of view, rather than directly toward them. Lower sensitivity settings help reduce false triggers from pets or swaying branches, and carefully aim the light heads at night to adjust for optimal coverage and minimal light pollution.
